The Sunrise Beach Board of Trustees is honoring and thanking former Police Chief David Slavens and retiring his Badge No. 771.

In a resolution passed at the Monday, July 9 board meeting, the board said: "Chief Slavens has served the people of the Village of Sunrise Beach with exemplary dedication and commitment to the peace, security and safety of the Village. The board commended and thanked Chief Slavens for his many years of dedicated law enforcement service, and especially for his positive contribution to the Sunrise Beach Police Department."

The board also wished him a healthy and enjoyable retirement. His badge was retired, so no other Sunrise Beach police officer will wear it. Former Chief Slavens was hired by the city on May 7, 1991. Prior to serving with the Sunrise Beach police department, Chief Slavens served with the Macks Creek police department.

Other Sunrise Beach Village Business

Bott appointed to P&Z

In other business, the board approved Mayor Curt Mooney’s nomination appointing Charlie Bott to the Sunrise Beach Planning and Zoning Commission. Bott is both a former P&Z commissioner, and board trustee. While serving on the P&Z commission he was instrumental in the creation and establishment of the village Master Plan and planning and zoning. He retired his board seat three months ago.

CUP approved

The board also approved a recommendation by the Sunrise Beach Planning and Zoning Commission for a request by Steve Chapman, Strong Inc., LLC for a Conditional Use Permit, CUP. Chapman is opening a fabrication shop in the Old Summit Natural Gas building on Highway 5. A CUP was necessary because he wanted to conduct retail sales at the same location. The property is currently zoned Commercial 2, which can allow light industrial, but outside activities such as fork lifts and large deliveries are prohibited in Commercial 2 zoning. Since they cannot zone the property industrial, due to it being in the middle of a commercial area, the CUP was required. The business will be monitored to ensure Chapman conducts business within the perimeters of the stipulations placed on the CUP.

Possible new internet service

The board discussed approving Whisper Internet to rent space on the village water tower. Owner Dave Crabtree informed the board the new business would provide an internet option to dead areas. A contract will be brought to the board for a review and decision at the 6 p.m. Monday, August 13 board of trustees meeting, at the Sunrise Beach City Hall.

Police

In closed session, the board approved increasing the pay for part time police officers.

The Sunrise Beach Police Department responded to 132 calls for service in June.

Stop sign coming

The board approved authorizing the installation of a stop sign at the location, and in place of the yield sign, at the intersection of Beachwood and Kansas City Way. The sign was expected to be delivered and installed in July.

Roads ready for Shootout

Public works employee Brian Scheiter reported the Kula Bay Road leading to Captain Ron’s Bar & Grill would be graded before the upcoming Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, scheduled Saturday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 26. The cost of the repairs are approximately $400. He also said his crew would be trimming trees along street easements and repairing roads in the next few weeks.
