"I wish[.] i love the lake."
That's Patrick Mahomes' mom Randi Mahomes in her response to the social media fake stories that won't quit.
Everyone loves a good rumor, and a favorite trope at Lake of the Ozarks is the, "such-and-such celeb has a house here." Now, those stories are pretty plausible: plenty of celebs have owned homes or been known to visit Lake of the Ozarks. And people love it when they do (one of our all-time most-viewed articles was about Blake & Gwen's trip to the Lake during the early days of COVID shutdowns.)
And perhaps no celeb rumor makes its way through social media more often than the one that claims Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has a Lake of the Ozarks home.
A recent iteration occurred on the Instagram page of a St. Louis teacher, @michelle.in.stl, who posted a video of a well-known lakefront mansion (owned by a local businessman) with the overlaid text, "Patrick Mahomes lakehouse 📍Lake of the Ozarks Missouri."
The caption read: "Sources claim this is Mahomes lakehouse." This is technically true... if your sources are other social media posts. She later added, "Update: sources are incorrect"
Regardless of the facts, the video performed admirably, garnering 4.1 million views and 60k likes, to date.
However, one of those 4.1 million views was from Patrick's mom. Kansas City Star sports writer Pete Grathoff found her in the comment section. "I wish i love the lake" she wrote simply.
Let no one say investigative journalism is dead. Even if it only exists to debunk the same false claims about a celebrity... over and over.
That said, if Mr. Mahomes would like to buy a house at the Lake, we've got a team that can help.
