The airport has been a source of controversy for veterans and others in the community since the 2014 Air Show. Last fall, Camdenton Aldermen proposed renaming the airport and removing the word "Memorial" from its name. That proposal met with backlash.

The city has now renamed the airport "Camdenton Memorial Lake Regional Airport" and is working toward the construction of a veterans memorial/monument on the airport grounds.
