CAMDENTON, Mo. — Not everyone is a fan of the new name for Camdenton’s airport.
Two citizens spoke to Camdenton’s Board of Alderman on Oct. 21 about the airport name change. First to speak was a member of the Airport Advisory Board, who gave the reasons for the board’s recommendation to rename the airport Camdenton Lake of the Ozarks Regional Airport.
One reason given was a planned runway extension that will allow larger planes to use Camdenton’s airport. This longer runway will bring in more traffic bound for the entire Lake of the Ozarks region, especially in light of Camdenton’s reputation for excellent air service, he said. Furthermore, he explained pilots researching airports for a trip to Lake of the Ozarks will see that designation in the new name for the airport, making Camdenton a destination airport for those touring the area.
The other individual voiced objections held by some opponents of the name change. At issue is the loss of the word, “Memorial,” honoring those who died during World War II. Proponents and opponents seem to agree, however, that a marker recognizing the original name should be erected. In addition, some citizens have suggested that those who donated the land for the city to build the airport should be commemorated along with the veterans who lost their lives in the Second World War. The aldermen seemed to view these ideas favorably.
Later in the meeting the Board took up Bill No. 2555-14 to amend the Code of the City of Camdenton to change the name of the airport to Camdenton Lake of the Ozarks Regional Airport in City codes. This passed with a majority voting in the affirmative.
After thanking the speakers for being present and sharing their points of view, the Mayor directed the meeting to proceed with reports from the City Administrator, departments, boards, and committees. City Administrator Hancock announced that the city sewer works’ ultraviolet system is in place and thus, the city has complied with requirements set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
Parks and Recreation Director Bennett stated that 9,600 people visited the pool during 2014. He said this proves what a valuable community resource the pool is. He also noted that locations for the last three disc-golf holes have been identified, and if the weather holds, the 18-hole course will be completed soon.
Police Chief Laura Wright received approval to award a new police vehicle bid to Sakelaris Ford. Public Works Director Jeffries reported that sewer smoke tests have revealed 22 problems in one section. The department is working on those. He also assured the aldermen that all salt for the winter has been delivered.
