OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — Police have released more details about a fatal crash that took place on the Grand Glaize Bridge Wednesday evening.
Authorities say a family was attempting to pick up a Rocky Mount man who was walking on the Grand Glaize Bridge when their car was hit by another vehicle from behind. Police say that vehicle's driver reportedly attempted to swerve out of the way but hit the car as the pedestrian was trying to get in.
The Lake area was covered in a heavy fog Wednesday after rising temperatures followed icy weather earlier in the week.
In a press release issued Thursday morning, police say 28-year-old Austin McFall was driving a 2018 GMC Acadia when he stopped on the bridge to pick up 30-year-old Zachariah Breeden. McFall had reportedly moved to the far-right lane with his vehicle's hazard lights activated.
Emma Gretlein, 24, was driving a 2008 Hyundai Sorento eastbound when she realized the GMC was stopped, according to police. She reportedly was unable to avoid the GMC and hit it as Breeden was attempting to get in the car on the rear seat of the driver's side. The Sorento reportedly struck Breeden and the left side of the GMC.
Osage Beach Police were dispatched to eastbound Highway 54 on the bridge at 4:10 p.m. The incident jammed up eastbound traffic on the bridge.
Crystal Loyd with the Camden County Medical Examiner's Office pronounced Breeden deceased on the scene.
Nicole McFall, 30, and three minors were in Austin McFall's GMC at the time of the crash. They were checked on scene by ambulance personnel and declined transport.
Greitlin was also checked on scene by ambulance personnel and declined transport.
The Osage Beach Police Department was assisted by the Osage Beach Ambulance, Osage Beach Fire Protection District, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Lake Ozark Fire Protection District, Mercy Ambulance, and the Camden County Sheriff’s Department.
