LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — A typical hot and humid July 4th at Lake of the Ozarks quickly turned into gale-force winds and severe thunderstorms, with a midday blast of Missouri weather.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in the area around noon, and at around 2 p.m., a powerful cell developed over the region with high-velocity winds, lightning, and heavy rain.

According to Poweroutage.us, almost 30,000 businesses and residences at the Lake lost power.

Early reports of storm damage in the Lake area included many downed trees on roads and power lines, an overturned semi-trailer, damaged signs, and a power line fire.

A dock also broke loose from the shoreline around the 3.5 Mile Marker on Horseshoe Bend, with an eyewitness reporting the dock had begun to float downstream and boats that had been were floating away.

The storm lasted less than an hour.

The storm brought welcome rainfall after a dry week, but at an unwelcome moment for Lake area businesses on what is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year. SuperSplash USA, the waterpark in Linn Creek, closed early for the day. After the storm blew through, many venues around the Lake announced they had cancelled their July 4th festivities and bands, due to loss of power.
