A paraplegic Kansas City man who wrecked into a tree while driving his car using an ice scraper to operate the pedals now faces a federal gun charge.

William L. Williams, a paroled murderer, was found with a gun in his lap after the Wednesday morning wreck at 38th and South Benton streets, according to court documents.

Williams, 35, is now charged in U.S. District Court with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A Kansas City Fire Department paramedic found a dazed Williams in the driver’s seat of the wrecked car, according to the documents.

The paramedic removed the 9mm handgun and a pill bottle that was also in his lap.

After he was treated for minor injuries, Williams told police that he had been “drinking and smoking all night.” He said he had taken a couple of muscle relaxer pills and must have nodded off before wrecking.

He told police that the gun they found belonged to his girlfriend.

Williams has multiple felony convictions, including one for the 2001 murder of Michael Birks in Kansas City.

That killing involved members of a notorious street gang, the 51st Street Crips.
