LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — With areas around the Lake reporting in excess of seven inches of rain in a 36 hour period, Ameren Missouri is fighting to lower the water level at Lake of the Ozarks. Ameren has opened all 12 floodgates of Bagnell Dam, nearly doubling the dam’s flow with the turbines at full capacity. As of 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, Ameren reported water was flowing at 75,039.66 cubic feet per second (cfs). The turbines alone are capable of allowing 40,000 cfs. But in spite of the floodgates opening, the Lake has risen past 660 feet (considered full pool). Ameren reported at 2 p.m. on Sunday the Lake of the Ozarks level measured at Bagnell Dam was 661.82.

The floodgates’ opening also means the Osage River has risen dramatically. On Sunday afternoon, the river level was at 577.66 below the dam: over 10 feet higher than it was on Christmas Day, before the rains began.

Since Saturday afternoon, the floodgates have continued to open wider, the Lake of the Ozarks and Osage River levels have continued to rise, and rain has continued to fall across the region.
