Osage Beach Police are alerting the public to be on the lookout for counterfeit money circulating in the Lake area. The silver lining is: the counterfeits appear to be pretty poor.

The OBPD said the fake bills may be in denominations of $5, $20 and $100 bills. However, authorities say the bills appear to be printed on cheap printer paper. Osage Beach Police have taken several reports recently and are working to identify suspects in these cases.

One way to detect counterfeit money is to feel it: real money is made of cotton and linen fibers and should feel crisp, whereas the counterfeit bills are made of normal paper, which becomes soft and smooth after use. As a result, fakes tend to tear more easily.

Also, real money has red and blue fibers that are visible in the paper, whereas counterfeit money often has the fibers drawn or printed into the money. Real money also has a security thread in the paper showing the denomination. Also, the hologram watermark showing the portrait on the face of the bill is missing in counterfeit bills.
