LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — Any angler can tell you it's typically not a good thing when your rod and reel break. But for one young fisherman, it signaled the catch of a lifetime.
Over the weekend, three boys entered their first Big Bass Bash tournament along with thousands of other anglers. Jason Riek and Andy Cook were able to get their sons, who had never fished for bass, together for the annual event, but the kiddos didn't catch the lunker they were looking for.
Before coming in for the day, Jayse, Jaden, and Beckett decided to fish off their dock on Apache Point in Climax Springs.
That's where their luck changed.
Seven-year-old Beckett Cook was fishing when his rod and reel broke. On the line was a once-in-a-lifetime catfish. Undeterred by the broken fishing gear, Beckett and his dad didn't give up — they pulled the beast in by hand.
The catfish was just about as big as Beckett. It maxed-out their 70-pound scale!
The uncommonly huge fish didn't break the state record for Blue Catfish. That's held by Greg Bernal, who caught a 130-pounder on the Missouri River in 2010. However, it'll be a fish the boys will remember forever.
"It was an incredible moment," Jason Riek said.
But now they've caught the fishing bug even more.
Riek added, "After his unbelievable catch, like a true fisherman, Beckett said, 'Don't get excited, get serious. Let's do it again!'"
