CAMDENTON, Mo. — Relief for one of the Lake area’s busiest traffic corridors may finally be on the horizon.
Highway 54 gets busy, particularly around the Route 5 intersection and surrounding commercial area. The stretch is one of the most congested in Camden County, where heavy local traffic and seasonal tourism can cause backups that sometimes extend for miles. MoDot has a complete Phase 1 plan for improving traffic flow, but it would cost an estimated $4 million, and currently Governor Mike Kehoe has placed funding for that project on hold.
Now Camden County Commission and the City of Camdenton's Board of Aldermen have taken the first steps toward funding a long-awaited solution.
Both entities have each committed 25% of the necessary funding to construct "Phase 1A" of an improvement project. MoDOT Central District will begin the application process to apply for the other 50% funding from their sources.
Phase 1A represents the initial construction stage of a broader plan designed to reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency, and better serve residents, businesses, and visitors. Estimated costs for Phase 1A have not been shared at this time.
City and county leaders said the shared funding commitment moves the project forward and highlights their focus on improving traffic flow and safety. They added the investment helps build momentum as officials continue seeking additional funding for future phases.
Further updates regarding project timelines, design details, and construction scheduling will be announced as they become available.
