ST. LOUIS • A St. Louis man on probation for drug possession and resisting arrest faces new charges of assaulting police and other crimes after allegedly pointing a gun at city police Monday.

Police say a city officer saw Melvin W. Fraction, 27, about 2:40 p.m. Monday clutching his waistband as though he was holding a weapon as he got out of a car in the 4200 block of North Euclid Avenue in the city's Penrose neighborhood. As the officer tried to get Fraction's attention, Fraction ignored him and walked into a back yard on the block, charges say.

Fraction then pulled a semiautomatic pistol with an extended clip from under his sweatshirt and pointed it at the officer, charges say. The officer, "fearing he would be shot," fired once at Fraction but missed.

The officer yelled that Fraction was under arrest, charges say, but Fraction ran off through a gangway. He jumped a chain-link fence and ran into his home on the block through the back door, according to court documents.

Police followed Fraction inside and found him hiding in an upstairs bedroom with the loaded .40-caliber pistol, charges say. The clip was found in another bedroom. Fraction admitted having the gun.

Fraction was charged Tuesday with four felonies: assaulting police, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest and armed criminal action. Bail was set at $70,000 cash.

Court records say Fraction is on probation for a 2011 convictions of drug possession and resisting arrest in St. Louis. Charges in St. Clair County include drug possession in 2010 and aggravated fleeing with injury and property damage in 2013.
