It was a big election day in Missouri, as voters turned out for the primaries.

Major statewide races were for U.S. Senator (formerly Roy Blunt’s seat) and U.S. Representative, and primaries across the state also selected the candidates to appear on the November ballot for state senator and state representative seats.

The August primaries in many cases are more significant than the November election, when it comes to elected offices, as many counties and voting districts lean heavily toward one political party: so the candidate who wins the primary for that party in August will be the almost-certain victor in November.

We’ve published winners in key races below. Because many districts lean so heavily Republican that there’s typically no doubt that the Republican candidate will win the race in November, we’ve only published Republican primary results in most races. Full results for all parties can be found on the Missouri Secretary of State’s website: https://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/s_default

The major takeaways:

• Eric Schmitt definitively won the U.S. Senate nomination for the Republican Party in a very crowded candidate field with several big names.

• Blaine Luetkemeyer won the U.S. Representative District 3 Republican Party nomination.

• Mark Alford won the U.S. Representative District 4 Republican Party nomination
