With Halloween coming up, trick-or-treating is on the minds of LakeExpo.com readers. If you're wondering what candy to avoid handing out this Halloween to elude getting "tricked," The Candy Store polled 40,000 customers for their opinions on the worst and best candy for Halloween. Hint: the pros say it's NOT Tootsie Rolls.
10. Mary Janes: Has anyone even heard of this one (and is it more popular in Colorado)?
9. Good & Plenty: In a pinch, they're tolerable if you suck off the outer sugar coating. Please use caution when applying this method. If you get greedy with the sugary shell, you could ruin all your hard work by accidentally making contact with the licorice center.Â
8. Licorice: Two words: dad candy.
7. Smarties: These tiny candy buttons made the wrong list. Iconic and simple, Smarties are underappreciated considering the ratio of sweetness and tartness to their size. They really do pack a punch! Â
6. Tootsie Rolls: Not really chocolate, not really wax, but are they really the worst? Tootsie Rolls serve an important role as a suitable back-up for chocolate in a moment of candy desperation.Â
5. Peanut Butter Kisses: Just like some animals have markings that indicate they are a threat to predators, so do these orange or black wrapped "candies" in disguise. Our staff has yet to determine if these chunks of wax are simply trying to avoid being eaten or if they have ulterior motives.
4. Necco Wafers: As the cousin of the Valentine's conversation heart, one would expect these to be reasonably good. However, when I was a kid, I pretended they were medicine and would hand them out to my friends pretending to be sick. Not much of a testimonial.Â
3. Wax Coke Bottles (aka Nik-L-Nips): When wax is in the name of a food, there's really no need to explain why it makes on "the worst" list.Â
2. Candy Corn: You love it or you hate it. In our office, it was a 3-4 vote against. But one fan (who shall remain unnamed) was a BIG fan, especially of candy corn's cousin: candy pumpkins.Â
1. Circus Peanuts: Like sugar-coated styrofoam peanuts, it's a mystery why they still exist. Does anyone even like circus peanuts? Well, our Editor admits he loves them. Which explains a lot.Â
