Lake Ozark Fire Protection District has added pet oxygen masks to its front-line medic units to keep pets safe in the event of a fire.
The new pet masks come after a recent fire in the district in which a resident was saved but, unfortunately, her pets succumbed to the smoke conditions. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, it’s estimated that nearly 40,000 pets die annual in fires in the United States, most due to smoke inhalation.

After the fire, Lake Ozark firefighter and Paramedic Kevin Box reached out to Kristine McMahon, an area resident, who facilitated donation of these wonderful masks. WAG’N O2 For Life, founded in 2008, is donating the masks, which will help keep Lake Ozark pets safe.
"Our pets, regardless of their size, are part of our families, and we want to give them every opportunity for survival, no different than their human counterparts," said the Lake Ozark Fire Protection District in a press release.
The masks were presented on Friday, Feb. 24 at Lake Ozark FPD Station#1.
