OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — It was a close call for one Osage Beach Fire Protection District firefighter after he fell into a sewage treatment vat while fighting a fire at Three Season Condominiums.
The fire was reported as coming from the laundry house near the pool where smoke could be seen coming out of the eaves on Friday, Dec. 10 at 12:33 a.m. Osage Beach firefighters arrived at the scene four minutes later and began fighting the blaze with an exterior hydrant and an interior attack that brought firefighters inside the building.
Suddenly, the interior team received a mayday that one of the firefighters had fallen through the floor and into a vat of raw sewage. The firefighter had managed to grab onto the walkway that he had fallen from to keep from being completely submerged. The interior crew was able to rescue the firefighter. It was later discovered that the building was a sewer treatment plant and that he had not fallen through the floor but had fallen off a bridge that extended over 4 different treatment vats. A total of three firefighters were exposed to raw sewage.
Decontamination was performed and the firefighter was brought to an ambulance for observation. Thankfully, he sustained no injuries.
According to the district's report, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
