LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — The Missouri Highway Patrol has announced it will conduct a BWI sobriety checkpoint on Lake of the Ozarks between now and the end of July. The MSHP’s stated goal of this enforcement effort is to detect and apprehend impaired boat operators, leading to a safe and enjoyable experience for the boating public.

Boaters who come across a checkpoint on the water can expect that they may be stopped. Officers will make brief contact with the operator and perform a basic safety check of the boat’s equipment. If the officer suspects the operator to be under the influence of intoxicants and/or drugs, he or she will be asked to submit to a field sobriety test.

"Boating is a fun recreational activity, but safety must be a priority," stated Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer of Troop F. He also extended a reminder to boat operators: "Always make sure each boat passenger has a life jacket available, and never operate any type of watercraft after consuming alcohol or drugs."
