LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — After major overnight flooding, Ameren has opened the floodgates at Bagnell Dam.

Alan Sullivan, an engineer for Ameren, noted some areas in the drainage area leading to the Lake had received five inches of rain overnight. Sullivan said the Lake level had risen from 659.19 at midnight to 660.1 at 9 a.m.

Wednesday morning, Ameren was allowing the maximum flow of 40,000 cubic feet per second through the dam's generators. Water flow through Truman Dam into Lake of the Ozarks has been completely shut off.

But with such heavy rains last night and more forecast today, at 10 a.m., Ameren opened 11 of the dam's 12 floodgates by 10 percent. Ameren expects to open floodgates throughout the day, as needed.

Osage River - Bagnell Dam Floodgates Open

After major overnight flooding, Ameren has opened 11 floodgates at Bagnell Dam on July 1, 2015.

Those actions raised the flow from 40,000 cfs to 50,000 cfs, which is expected to raise the Osage River by four feet, and will affect flood staging downstream.

The last time the floodgates were opened was in 2013, when heavy flooding came to the Lake area. Homes were damaged and property was destroyed in the catastrophic flooding.

With the heavy rains, the Lake of the Ozarks has a large amount of debris on the surface of the water.
