SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — Sunrise Beach Police Chief David Slavens and Officer Jeff Campbell tracked down a wallet thief in less than one hour, after a wallet was stolen.

On Monday, March 29, officers were called to investigate a call from a woman at the Woods Supermarket in Sunrise Beach, who reported her wallet had been stolen. According to Chief Slavens, there was approximately $200 in cash, plus credit cards and the usual important documents, such as a social security card and driver’s license, in the wallet.

Chief Slavens and Officer Campbell reviewed a supermarket’s security surveillance video. “We were very fortunate to get a good description of the thief and her car from the surveillance video,” Chief Slavens commented. Although they did not recognize the woman, they did have a local car in mind in the neighborhood that matched the one on the store surveillance tape.

Officers began a search for the woman and the vehicle. They located the suspect at a residence on Deep Water Drive in Sunrise Beach. “She was wearing the same distinctive clothing as in the video,” Chief Slavens said. Officers say they interrogated the woman, obtained a full confession, issued a summons for stealing and arrested her.

Officers returned the wallet to the victim within one-hour after the initial report was taken. “The victim couldn’t believe we were able to turn it around that quickly,” Chief Slavens said. “She was greatly appreciative.”
