CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo. — Two people were rescued Monday after a pickup truck overturned while attempting to cross a flooded creek in southwest Camden County.

According to the Southwest Camden County Fire Protection District, crews were dispatched May 18 to the area of Roy Willis Lane after reports that a truck had tried to cross high water and flipped. Initial callers were unsure whether the driver and passenger were still inside the vehicle.

Firefighters responded immediately and requested mutual aid from the Mid-County Fire Protection District’s water rescue team.

When crews arrived, they found fast-moving, deep water with the pickup truck on its side and both occupants already out of the vehicle but stranded in the water.

With assistance from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, one person was guided to shallower water and turned over to Mercy EMS personnel. The second occupant was rescued using swift water rescue techniques before also being transferred to EMS care.

The fire district reminded residents not to attempt driving through flooded roadways or creek crossings.“Please never try to cross any flooded creeks or rivers. Turn around, don’t drown.”
