ROACH, Mo. — An iPhone Crash Detection alert helped lead emergency crews to a serious wreck Tuesday morning near Roach, where a pickup had crashed into a cell phone tower and left one person trapped inside.
The Northwest Fire Protection District was dispatched at approximately 5:43 a.m. to State Route 7 near State Route J after Camden County Communications received the automated crash notification.
The first fire unit arrived about five minutes later and found a pickup truck that had struck a cell phone tower, with one occupant heavily entrapped.
Firefighters immediately began extrication efforts. Northwest Fire said the extensive damage to the truck and the position of the patient made the rescue especially difficult, and crews at one point used two sets of extrication tools at the same time.
Firefighters were able to free the occupant. The patient was transported to Lake Regional Hospital with moderate injuries.
Northwest Fire responded with two engines and five personnel. Crews remained on scene afterward while waiting for an engineer to inspect the tower for possible structural damage.
