SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — Sunrise Beach is moving forward with a project to increase the customers on the village’s water system by nearly 50 percent.

The Village Board of Trustees approved going out to bid on the Phase III Water project at their Monday, July 11 meeting.

In the Phase III project, Village engineers Schultz Surveying and Engineering (SSE) will connect approximately 92 new customers to the village waterworks system, bringing the total water customer base to 300.

The infrastructure project will bring water connections to Sunrise Beach residents in the Ambrosia, Beachwood, Kansas City Way and Castle Gardens area. They have no public water available, and aging private sewer infrastructure threatens to contaminate area water wells.

SSE was hired to design a system that would provide safe drinking water to Sunrise Beach water customers, as well as water infrastructure for fire protection. The system design includes a water main extension, installing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) meters, fire hydrants and flush hydrants. According to City Planner Roger Corbin, the new infrastructure will also pave the way for economic growth in village by providing the potential to supply water to both future residential and commercial users.

The board’s approval also included connecting another 28 residents on Eddie Road, if funding is approved. Currently the village is waiting for final approval to receive a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for 75 percent of the cost of the Phase III Water project. “We will authorize the go-ahead pending funding approval. If there is no funding we will pull the Eddie Road portion,” Village Mayor Curt Mooney explained.

SSE Engineer Jared Wheaton reported all the easements, except one, have been received and more than half of the needed connection agreements have been returned. The village distributed the connection agreements near the Fourth of July in an effort to catch part-time residents at their Lake home over the holiday. The board also approved sending a mailing to those who have not returned their Phase III water connection agreement, just in case they were not at their Lake-home over the Fourth.

Wheaton added that they were ready to submit five copies of the projects specs and plans to the DNR to obtain approval of the Phase III project construction permit. He said the comments on the Finding of No Significant Environmental Impact are expected to be approved shortly and the Due Diligence Questionnaire was submitted on Friday, July 8.

In other board business on Monday night, in closed session, the board approved entering into negotiations with Charter Communications regarding unpaid franchise fees owed to the village.
