Bert Rorick Scott III Obituary

Bert Rorick Scott III, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, distinguished United States Army veteran, engineer, and respected leader, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service to his country, his profession, and, above all, his family.

Bert was born on November 14, 1946, in Richland, Washington, to Colonel Bert Rorick Scott Jr. and Vivian Scott. He graduated from Avalon High School in Avalon, California, in 1964. He continued his education at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Geology with a minor in science. He later attended Webster University, earning a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management (MBA), graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

Bert proudly served in the United States Army including the Vietnam era, obtaining the rank of Major. After retirement from the Army, he obtained the rank of GS15 as a civilian Command Engineer. His distinguished career, spanning from 1966 to 2017, included serving as Installation Commander at Camp Giant, Korea, from June 1984 through May 1986. During this time he also married his beautiful wife Su in Korea.

Throughout his military and civilian careers, Bert demonstrated exceptional leadership, engineering expertise, and an unwavering dedication to public service. His accomplishments earned recognition at both the Army and national levels.

Among his many professional achievements were; the national award of Corps of Engineers’ Productivity Improvement Award; in 1985 the achievement award and Commander’s Award for Civilian Service; presented on August 15, 1989, was an achievement award and an national recognition, and nomination for Engineer Executive of the Year in 1988 and 1989; and Exceptional Performance Ratings and Performance Awards from 1985–2004 and again from 2008–2014.

Bert was also recognized with numerous military decorations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (20LC), Meritorious Service Medal (10LC), Army Commendation Medal (20LC), and seventeen additional medals and ribbons.

His commitment to professional development was equally impressive. Bert completed specialized training that included the Installation Commander’s Course at Fort Lee, Virginia; the Executive Development Program; Installation Traffic Management Course; Organizational Leadership for Executives; Personnel Management for Executives (PME); and Chemical Officers Training Course.

He was also a member of the Professional Housing Managers Association (PHMA), the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), the Engineers’ Club of St. Louis, and Avalon Lions Club.

Outside of work and military service, Bert had a deep appreciation for the pleasures of ordinary life. He was an enthusiastic collector of marbles, coins, and stamps, and enjoyed the search as much as the discovery—finding unexpected treasures at auctions and garage sales. He loved oldies music, ranching, traveling with his wife, and the many stories and moments that came with those things.

Most of all, Bert loved his family. His children and grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart. Time spent with Emma, William, Maximus, and Maya was among the things he treasured most. In those moments, there was no rank to carry, no achievement to defend, and nothing left to prove. There was simply Bert, with his family.

While Bert’s life was marked by distinguished service and many accomplishments, his greatest joy and deepest pride were found in his family. He cherished his wife, loved his children, and treasured every moment with his grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his strength, his dedication, his generous spirit, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. His life touched many, but his place in the hearts of his family will remain forever.

Bert is survived by his loving wife, Su Tan Scott; his children, Bert R. Scott IV and his wife, Ania, and Michelle V. Patel and her husband, Neil; his grandchildren, Emma, William, Maximus, and Maya; his sister, Pamela; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Bert Rorick Scott Jr. and Vivian Ruth Scott, and his brother, Dwight Scott.
