This Invention Is Helping Lake Homeowners Enjoy Their Docks Again

It's a peaceful evening hanging out on the dock... 'til that huge boat rolls by.

A new invention by a dock-builder from Alabama could be a game-changer for dock owners, keeping the dock steady even in rough waters.

Check out our interview with David Billings, the inventor of Wake Breaker.

You’re sitting on your dock at the Lake of the Ozarks, with family and friends, enjoying a cold drink… and then, without fail, it begins. The big boats begin to roll through. The dock starts rocking and creaking, your drink spills across the deck, the vibe is ruined.

Wind and boat traffic can keep docks rocking year-round. For some, busy boating weekends can mean staying off the dock altogether. “They didn’t have their sea legs and kept getting nauseated by the constant movement,” David Billings said of a customer who came to his business at their wits’ end. Billings had a solution: The Wake Breaker.

After installing The Wake Breaker, this couple experienced an estimated 50% reduction in movement on their dock. They got their Lake life back.

The Wake Breaker, invented by Billings, is a patented wave attenuation system designed to absorb and disperse wave energy rather than letting it crash into the dock, wearing it down over time. It's the only one of its kind and attaches directly to the dock.

Billings knows the roller coaster a floating dock becomes when the Lake is busy with boats. As a seasoned dock builder, he had received several calls from customers asking if there was a way to stabilize their docks and reduce the impact of waves. At the time, he couldn’t find a system that did what he was looking for, so he decided to design one.

The Wake Breaker system uses a flexible polypropylene membrane with a custom weave pattern designed by Billings. As waves move through the membrane, their energy is dispersed and the force is absorbed.

Billings compares the concept to a cheese grater.

“The weave pattern that I designed disperses the kinetic energy,” he said. “It acts to water like cheese does to a cheese grater.”

Wake Breaker - the cheese grater effect

Instead of bouncing the waves back toward other docks that may be close by, The Wake Breaker actually disperses the energy.

Docks sit in the water 24/7/365, and the repeated beating they take from waves contributes to loose hardware, bent pins, damaged connections and other maintenance issues. Reducing wave motion up to 50% (or more) can have a significant impact on the longevity of those dock components.

But protecting the dock is only part of the reason people install the system.

One customer said his wife was just never comfortable on their dock. After installing The Wake Breaker, they reported an 80% reduction in movement. They loved the product so much, they became Wake Breaker dealers.

While his original focus was preventing the wear and tear that can turn a major dock investment into an ongoing repair bill, Billings says he loves that The Wake Breaker is letting people enjoy their docks again, even on busy weekends.

“It’s not just for comfort,” Billings said. “But that’s definitely icing on the cake.”

Each system is custom designed and fitted to the individual dock, and certified installers handle the installation.

The Wake Breaker works around the clock, helping reduce the effects of waves from boat traffic, wind, and storms throughout the year.

For Billings, the goal remains simple: give Lake homeowners more time enjoying their docks—and less time worrying about what the next big wave might do to them. To find a local dealer/installer, reach out to TheWakeBreaker.com  today or give them a call at 256-925-WAKE (9253).

**Stay tuned! Billings has another product coming soon that protects the lift both when it is down in the water and when it’s up with the boat. Dock and boat owners at the Lake can protect not only their docks but their lifts and boats, as well.**
