ST. LOUIS • A janitor was found dead inside a St. Louis elementary school on Wednesday morning from what appeared to be natural causes.

A cleaning crew arriving at Mason Elementary School found the janitor dead in the basement at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. The elementary school is at 6031 Southwest Avenue.

The janitor's shift was supposed to end at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Police got a call for "a person down," and requested evidence technicians to process the scene. Police said homicide investigators were summoned but determined there was no crime.

"The death appears to be medically related," Leah K. Freeman, a St. Louis police spokesman, said in an email.

The death and police investigation spurred the St. Louis Public Schools to relocate children in its summer school program from Mason Elementary to Mallinckrodt Elementary School, 6020 Pernod Avenue.

Patrick Wallace, a school district spokesman, said parents were notified Wednesday morning that summer school would be held Wednesday at Mallinckrodt. Kids who walked or were already dropped off at Mason would be taken by bus to Mallinckrodt.
