“We don’t know where to start!” This is something Coleman Appliance’s Business Manager Janna Mahan hears often from customers. That’s because making a decision about new appliances is a big deal. It’s like hiring someone to run a critical part of your home for the next 20 years.
“It’s not every day that people shop for new appliances. We want to make it easy for them,” Mahan said.
In a world of quick Google searches and endless online reviews, finding a real-life person who knows the brands, products, and pros and cons can be a breath of fresh air. That’s what customers find at Coleman Appliance.

For more than 70 years, Coleman Appliance has been helping families in Jefferson City and the surrounding areas, including the Lake of the Ozarks. As a family-owned business, Coleman Appliance has become a hometown staple—and generations of customers have continued to shop with a company they know and trust.
“We pride ourselves on not just selling an appliance, but also teaching customers how to use it,” Mahan said.
Both Mahan and Sales Manager Preston Moore are on the floor six days a week, ready to answer questions. “Customers know that we will be here and that we can answer their questions,” Mahan said.
So what are some of the biggest questions you should ask, according to the Coleman Appliance team? Here are a few.
• How do I actually use this appliance in my everyday life?
• Which features will I actually use, and do I understand how they work?
• What size appliance makes sense for my home and the space I have available?
• Which brands have a good service history and fewer recurring problems?
• Who will service the appliance if something goes wrong?
• For a dishwasher, what are my everyday habits—do I rinse dishes first, what detergent do I use, and do I use rinse aid?
Those questions — and the answers — can help narrow down the options and give the Coleman team a better idea of which appliance will fit a customer’s home, habits and needs.
Customers can also rest assured that if they need help with an appliance, they won’t be handed off to an anonymous 800 number. Coleman works with local service teams whose technicians know the products and the customers.
Because the company works closely with its service technicians, it hears firsthand about common problems and recurring issues with different brands. That information helps the Coleman team select products they can confidently recommend.
Coleman Appliance carries tried and true brands like GE, Thermador, Frigidaire, BlueStar, Speed Queen, and Midea.
And the recommendations go far beyond simply matching a customer with a price point. “I want to show customers new things that can make their lives easier,” Mahan said.
In Coleman’s live demonstration kitchen, customers can see new technology in action. From induction cooktops that offer fast, precise cooking with easy cleanup, to versatile Advantium ovens that combine five cooking functions, the goal is to show customers how the appliance actually works—not just simply tell them about it.
But for Mahan, it always comes back to educating customers so they can make the best decisions for their home. She remembers one customer who came in looking for an oven and mentioned that she had owned a convection oven for years but wasn’t particularly impressed with it. After asking a few questions, the Coleman staff discovered that the customer didn’t really know how a convection oven worked, so she rarely used the feature. Once they explained that a fan circulates hot air to help food cook more evenly, the customer realized how much the convection setting could have helped her in the kitchen.
“It takes just a few minutes to explain how it works,” Mahan says. “We want to help the customer make the appliance work for them.”
Take dishwashers, for example. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all answer, Coleman wants to understand how a customer actually uses their dishwasher. Do they rinse their dishes first? What type of detergent do they use? Do they use rinse aid? Those everyday habits can ensure top performance from the dishwasher and extend its life as long as possible.
Whether you’re furnishing a modest home where space matters or outfitting a high-end kitchen, Coleman Appliance has something for everyone. And with knowledgeable people who take the time to listen, explain and answer questions, customers can leave feeling confident in their decision.
