WASHINGTON • Sen. Claire McCaskill, one of the U.S. Senate’s frequent Tweeters, called Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a “snake oil salesman” in a series of posts mocking Trump’s appearance this week on Dr. Oz’s television show.

First, some history.

McCaskill, D-Mo., and Dr. Oz – whose full name is Dr. Mehmet C. Oz – themselves have a history.

Two years ago, McCaskill called the doctor before a Senate committee to accuse him of promoting weight-loss pills and cures that are too good to be true. It was a courtroom-like confrontation that drew headlines, with the former Kansas City prosecutor McCaskill saying that Dr. Oz had a huge microphone and should know better than to back magic weight-loss prescriptions like green coffee beans.

Dr. Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon and Columbia University professor, promised to do better, and said that in his “passion” for good health, sometimes used words he later regretted, or were taken out of context.

Fast forward to this week, when Trump appeared on Dr. Oz’s show and, in a moment befitting both men’s TV experiences, briefly handed the doctor a copy of Trump’s medical records. The scene set off a new series of speculation about Trump’s health and condemnation of the way he has gone about disclosing his health records.

McCaskill riffed on the Trump-Oz connection with this Wednesday tweet:
