MILLER COUNTY, Mo. — A local woman managed to escape her house as it burned, after her smoke alarm awoke her.

Lake Ozark Fire Protection District received a 911 emergency call at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6 to Byrd Circle, off W-20 and Village Marina Road, in Miller County.

According to Chief Mark Amsinger, arriving units found smoke coming from a house. A woman was on the second floor sleeping when her smoke alarm went off. She woke up to the smell of smoke and went downstairs to find her living room on fire. She was able to get out of the house and call 911.

Firefighters made an interior attack on the fire, extinguishing it quickly, thereby containing the fire to the room of origin.

There were no injuries. According to Chief Amsinger, the home sustained extensive heat and smoke damage throughout. The cause of the fire was marked as accidental.

Sunrise Beach and Rocky Mount Fire Protection Districts responded with mutual aid. Miller County Ambulance was also on the scene. More than 20 personnel and 10 apparatus responded. The scene was cleared at 7:25 a.m.

“This was a perfect example of how a smoke alarm works. She was asleep upstairs and woke up in time to get out. It could have ended a lot worse,” Chief Amsinger warned.

The Lake Ozark Fire Protection District has free smoke alarms for anyone who needs them. Call 573-365-3380 for more information.
