A local home burned to the ground last weekend after authorities say a trash fire got out of control.

The Rocky Mount Fire Protection District were toned out to a structure fire at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 to 26505 Navey Road in Rocky Mount. On arrival firefighters found a home 100 percent involved in fire. Mutual aid was requested from the City of Eldon Fire Department and Moreau Fire Protection District.

Firefighters began a defensive attack. A second home, 20 ft. away from the house of origin, was threatened.

Firefighters were able to save the second home; however, a shed and the first home were a total loss. “The house was already gone when we arrived,” Rocky Mount Fire Protection District Fire Chief Kevin Hurtibise said.

It was determined that the fire was started by a person who was burning trash. They allowed the fire to get out of control and set a shed on fire, that fire quickly spread to the nearby house.

Rocky Mount Fire Protection District responded with three apparatus and eight firefighters. Eldon Fire responded with one engine and three firefighters, and Moreau Fire Department responded with one fire fighter and one tanker.

There were no injuries. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
