A recent deal is clearing the way for a hiking/biking trail that will extend from St. Louis all the way to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
The 47-mile portion of the Rock Island trail stretching from Windsor, Mo. to Pleasant Hill, Mo. will be joined with a 17-mile stretch that will take the trail into the heart of Kansas City. That 47-mile stretch will be completed and open in 2016, according to Governor Jay Nixon. Work could begin on other portions of the trail next year.
A Jackson County press release explained, “Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders and Kansas City Area Transportation Authority President and CEO Joe Reardon announced a cooperative agreement today that will provide the financing necessary for the future acquisition of the 17.7 miles of the Rock Island Corridor from Union Pacific Railroad.”
“In just a few years you'll be able to ride from St Louis, Washington, Hermann, Jefferson City, Columbia, Sedalia, or Clinton all the way to the Arrowhead Stadium in the heart of the Kansas City area,” said MoBikeFed director Brent Hugh.
This development has significance for the Lake of the Ozarks area, since the portion of the Rock Island Trail under development in central Missouri will follow the old Rock Island rail line, which cuts through the middle of Eldon.
