LACLEDE COUNTY, Mo. — A Miller County man who pleaded guilty to stabbing a teenage girl to death in Iberia will not be allowed to set aside his guilty plea, and will spend the next 30 years in prison.
In November of 2014, Steven Henderson pleaded guilty to the June 22, 2013 murder of Macala Shelton, in Laclede County court. He was then sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole. Missouri revised statutes define life in prison as 30 years.
But two months later, in January of 2015, Henderson asked the court to set aside his guilty plea, claiming he had ineffective help from an attorney. A trial to consider Henderson’s request was held in July of 2016, with Prosecuting Attorney Ben Winfrey opposed to Henderson’s request.
On Nov. 22, 2016, the request was denied, and Henderson’s sentence of life in prison without parole stands.
