MILLER COUNTY, Mo. — He allegedly confessed to the murder of Macala Shelton on June 22, 2013, but today Steven Henderson pled Not Guilty to the crimes of First Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action in the case.

When he was being questioned after the murder occurred, Henderson reportedly told officials he had stabbed Shelton with a large survival knife and told them where the knife could be located. The weapon was later found at his residence, according the the probable cause statement from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

In a hearing on July 15, Henderson’s attorney Keith Halcomb filed a motion to “Prevent further violations of defendant’s constitutional rights by the Miller County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.” Judge Kenneth Oswald ordered all law enforcement agencies to not interrogate Henderson without legal counsel present.

A date for Henderson’s jury trial has not yet been announced.

Macala Shelton, age 13, was found murdered on Sunday, June 23. She was reported missing one day prior, after her grandmother discovered her absence upon entering Shelton’s room to wake her, according to the Miller County Sheriff’s Office. Within days, 30-year-old Steven Henderson, Shelton’s step-uncle, was charged with First Degree Murder.

In the investigation following the murder, officials also arrested Shelton’s step-father, Jerry L. Henderson II on charges unrelated to Shelton’s death. Officials reportedly found multiple firearms and a large cache of ammunition in Henderson II’s residence; it is illegal for Henderson II to possess firearms in Missouri because of a prior felony conviction. On Nov. 7, Henderson II pled guilty to Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, a Class-C felony. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 8, 2014.
