CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo. — “She has connections with the mayor,” the key witness for the prosecution said of Leigh Ann Bauman’s relationship with Lake Ozark Mayor Gerry Murawski.

After a preliminary hearing last week and absent a plea deal, Bauman is headed for trial for allegedly attempting to contract the murder of her ex-mother-in-law. 

In the week before her arrest in the alleged murder-for-hire plot, Bauman was spreading the word about her involvement with Murawski’s mayoral re-election campaign. 

According to the witness for the prosecution, the day Bauman allegedly first approached the witness to find a hitman to kill her ex-mother-in-law, she and Bauman went to Wal-Mart to pick up items for the mayor.

That same night, according to the Highway Patrol probable cause statement, the witness said she could not sleep and considered calling Bauman’s ex-mother-in-law to warn her, but worried the woman might call local law enforcement, with whom she believed Bauman had a political connection. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Bauman called the mayor’s cell phone and put it on speaker while investigators were interviewing her, previous to her arrest.

Prosecutors requested and were granted a no-bond warrant for Bauman, citing her political connections, ties to multiple states, finances, and danger to the victim.  

Bauman’s next court hearing is scheduled for April 7, one day after the Lake Ozark municipal election, when Murawski’s political ambition for re-election will be decided by voters against 12-year mayor Johnnie Franzeskos and popular new write-in candidate Dennis Newberry.
