Local firefighters are harnessing the flames they fight every day, in an annual fundraiser: selling smoked ribs to raise money to help kids affected by a fire.
Gravois Fire Protection District firefighters are holding their annual rib sale Thursday, June 28 through Saturday, June 30. This is an annual event held to provide money for children in Missouri who are victims of fire, to be able to attend the Mid-West Children’s Burn Recovery Camp, at no cost to them.
According to Gravois Fire Protection District Fire Chief Ed Hancock, the barbeque ribs have been a favorite of locals due to their slow-cooked tenderness and special rub. “They are my personal favorite,” Chief Hancock said. “We don’t cut corners when we purchase the ribs. We buy only fresh-premium meat.” According to Chief Hancock the association’s chef formerly owned a restaurant and he has perfected the rub recipe and smoking technique over the years.
Pre-ordering ribs is suggested because they sell out every year. Call 573-374-4442. There will be three pick-up times scheduled on the above dates, at the district office, located at 215 Route O in Laurie.
The cost for a child to attend burn camp is $2,000. The district’s goal is to be able to pay the total cost for at least one child to go to camp this year. Firefighters also travel to the camp on opening day, Monday, Aug. 6, to assist with unloading the children’s luggage. Persons interested in donating directly to the camp may do so by sending a check to: Burn Recovered 6220 South Lindbergh Blvd. Suite 203 St. Louis, Mo. 63123.
