LAURIE, Mo. — The city of Laurie says it can't help the Westlake Aquatic Center with its water bill.

Westlake Aquatic Center Board Treasurer Larry Byron attended the City of Laurie’s Feb. 14 Board of Aldermen meeting asking the city for a donation to help undergird pool finances, possibly in the form of a discounted water bill, the board promised to see what they could do.

City Clerk Ron Clarke reported at the Tuesday, March 14 Laurie Board of Aldermen meeting that Article 6, Section 25 of the Missouri Constitution prohibits the city from giving public funds to a private organization, so they will not give a donation or a discount on the pool’s public works bill.

Laurie public works employees did conduct a walk-through of the pool facility and advised that there were several cost savings measures the pool could take. The suggested options included the installation of water saving toilets, motion detector faucets and push valve showers. They estimated that the water saving toilets alone could save approximately $1,200 annually.
