Boats Were Dropping Like Flies At Lake Of The Ozarks Last Weekend

Towing Boat in the Winter

With sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s, last weekend kicked off boating season at Lake of the Ozarks... ready or not!

And like clockwork, the Lake answered back.

Without fail, the first boating weekend of the year reveals the things that silently went wrong over the winter, and last weekend was no exception. Boaters broke down, and towboat captains were busy.

In the five-day period from Thursday to Monday, our XTow team handled five different boaters in need of a tow. That's just a normal July 4th weekend at the Lake. But for March? Wild.

All five reported some kind of engine failure. And that could mean a wide range of problems; but when the engine just won't start, captains need a solution.

Three of those captains paid nothing for their tow.

Two of them got stuck with the bill.

That's a big deal, because the average tow was more than four hours long. And when towboats charge $200 or more per hour, that means three boaters saved about $1,000 apiece.

Why?

Because they were XTow members.

The other two who called? They had our dispatch number right, they just didn't have the membership. We never heard what their tow bills were (they paid the towboat guy directly)... but we can imagine.

The start of the season is when boats work out all their kinks from a long winter. Every year, boaters end up stranded on the water, and — if they're not XTow members — they're stuck with a towing bill.
