Westlake Aquatic Center - 100 Helping Hands

LAURIE, Mo. — The Westlake Aquatic Center’s “100 Helping Hands” campaign is halfway to the finish line. The campaign asks 100 people to give $100 for one goal: To pay off debt.

As of Wednesday, June 12, 100 Helping Hands had raised $5,905 towards the $10,000 goal to repay a loan for crucial repairs and remodeling.

The Westside community has given generously to the campaign, including members from the Ladies Elks, the Corvette Club, the Newcomers Club and a stream of individual donors. According to Westlake Aquatic Center board member Lucy Silliman, the pool will continue to take donations of any size for the 100 Helping Hands campaign until Monday, Sept. 1.

Silliman is passionate about the pool. She says it has been the source of her and her husband Marvin’s good health. The Sillimans are in their 70’s and will be traveling this week to hike, bike and kayak in Maine.

“You have to get old, you might as well be healthy and enjoy your life while you’re doing it,” Lucy said. “And the pool is a great way to stay healthy.”

Westsiders are currently enjoying the 87-degree water at the indoor pool for swimming, aerobics, water walking and fun.

Many senior citizens attribute their mobility to time spent in the pool. For some, the weightless exercise in the pool is the only exercise they can endure to rehabilitate after surgery.

The pool is also a hub for friends to gather and visit while participating in healthy life-lengthening exercise.

The mission of the Westlake Aquatic Center is to improve the health and quality of life of residents and visitors of all ages by providing physical fitness, rehabilitation, education and social opportunities in a safe and environmentally friendly facility that is accessible to all.

Donations to the Westlake Aquatic Center are tax deductible. Call 573-274-7370 and visit WestlakeAquaticCenter.com for more information. Donations may be sent to P.O. Box 1532, Laurie, MO 65038.
