OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — A driver, who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, and his passenger escaped serious injuries in a harrowing crash on Highway 54.
On Monday, Oct. 2 at approximately 11:35 a.m., officers responded to westbound Highway 54 at the Case Road exit. A white 2004 Chevy Avalanche had run up onto the guardrail on the Case Road exit, and was stuck with both driver's-side wheels up on the guardrail and the other two wheels on the ground.
The truck was operated by 52-year-old Rickey Webb of Eldon, who authorities say ran off the right side of Highway 54 and hit the Case Road exit sign, after falling asleep at the wheel. The vehicle continued forward where it struck the guardrail alongside the ramp to Case Road, and traveled over the top of the guardrail, coming to a stop on top of the guardrail. Webb and his passenger, April Bungart of Versailles, sustained minor injuries but refused medical attention. Webb’s vehicle suffered extensive damage and was towed from the scene.
Authorities say debris from the collision caused damage to a maroon 2016 Chevy Cruze driven by Anita Jeffries of Brumley, who was traveling west on the Case Road exit. Jeffries and her passenger Vickie Thacker of Brumley, were not injured and Jeffries was able to drive her vehicle from the scene. All occupants were reported to have been wearing their seat belts. Osage Beach officers were assisted by the Osage Beach Fire Protection District and Osage Beach Ambulance Service.
