It's a donation that could hardly cost less, but pays dividends in lives changed.
Kids’ Harbor—a child advocacy center serving central Missouri—is a much-loved and supported nonprofit in the Lake of the Ozarks community. Now, donating to the child advocacy center is a no-brainer, as Kids' Harbor was recently approved for $224,281 in tax credits through Missouri’s Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP). The program helps not-for-profit organizations raise private-sector contributions to fund approved community improvement projects.
The tax credits will be paid back to business donors, and combined with possible deductions, could almost completely reimburse corporate donors to Kids' Harbor, on their tax returns.
The tax credits are paid back on a 70-percent basis. For example, a business donor who gives $1,000 would receive a $700 credit on their taxes. That would be in addition to deductions, which in the highest tax brackets could be as high as an additional $144 (depending on the implications in the new tax law). As a result, a business that donates $1,000 to Kids' Harbor could receive up to $844 in tax savings: that means a thousand dollar donation really would only cost $156. A small price to pay for a life changed.
Kids’ Harbor is a nationally accredited child advocacy center serving 10 counties in the State of Missouri with locations in Osage Beach and St. Robert, Missouri. Kids’ Harbor’s mission is to provide coordinated response, healing, and prevention of child abuse. The organization fulfills this mission through a variety of services, offered free of charge, to child abuse victims and their non-offending caregivers. Some of these services include forensic interviews and medical exams, advocacy, mental health counseling, crisis intervention, crime victim’s compensation application assistance, multidiscipline case review, and prevention education. The 70 percent NAP credits issued to Kids’ Harbor are specifically earmarked to help the agency further develop a primary and secondary prevention program, as well as, supplement costs of providing new and ongoing advocacy services.
“We serve such generous communities that are always looking for a way they can viably do and give more,” said Heather Durbin, Kids’ Harbor’s Deputy Director. “We are thrilled to be able to facilitate a positive means for business leaders who want to make a significant impact in their community.”
Last year Kids’ Harbor received 698 new referrals for children in need of services due to reports of abuse or trauma. This number is nearly 14% higher than the number of new referrals received in 2016. “The numbers prove the need is great,” added Durbin. “Kids’ Harbor is encouraged by the ongoing support of our communities and their desire to help us meet each and every one of the needs we receive.”
