CAMDENTON, Mo. — A Camdenton woman was seriously hurt on Saturday, April 16 when she was run over by a trailer that was being used as a float in the Dogwood Parade.

A Dodge Dakota driven by 37-year-old Reuben Chambers, of Camdenton, was pulling a utility trailer on Illinois Street SW when it came to a stop behind parade traffic. Chambers said he began to move forward again when he felt the trailer “drag down,” and he stopped the vehicle. Bystanders say they heard a woman scream; Chambers said someone shouted at him to back up because he had run over someone. He backed the vehicle up, police say, and came to a stop after the trailer was off the woman.

Police say that woman, 67-year-old Susan Hammond, had been holding a child and was trying to set the child on the trailer, when the trailer began moving and it ran over her leg. Hammond later said she was not aware that she had been close to the trailer tire, until it started moving.

Police did not detail Hammond’s injuries, but an eyewitness said it appeared her leg had been fractured. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and the parade was delayed for a while to allow emergency personnel to respond.
