Two brothers from the Lake of the Ozarks are saddling up for the ride of a lifetime this weekend as they compete internationally in the Mini Bull Series Mexico Invitational, a “Mexico vs. USA” showdown featuring some of the best young bull riders in the world.
Maverick and Rhys Callahan, who are students at Camdenton, were both selected for Team USA Youth Rodeo and will compete in the senior and junior divisions of mini bull riding from May 16–19 in Chihuahua, Mexico. It’s not only their first time representing the country—but also their first time ever leaving it.
“It’s not easy. It's a lot of hard work,” said 14-year-old Maverick, who’s been riding for seven years after getting his start on calves. “It's nerve-wracking at first, but once you get on your bull and ride, it's exciting. And it's an honor to ride for Team USA and do the sport I love.”
While Maverick will be facing off with the biggest bulls in the bunch, his younger brother Rhys, 9, is just as passionate. He’s been riding since he was 3, competing nearly every summer, and Rhys says it’s his favorite thing to do.
Despite their young age, the Callahan boys are veterans in the youth rodeo circuit and among just 11 riders chosen to represent the U.S.—a group typically dominated by Texans. The brothers will also travel with Team USA to Australia this August to compete for the World Title.
Their parents have supported the boys’ journey every step of the way. Colby, a former bull rider himself, understands the grit it takes to ride at this level. Their mom says the boys’ dedication speaks volumes—Rhys and Maverick have qualified year after year against competitors from around the world, and despite the intense sport, they’ve had only one broken bone between them.
Training often takes place in a friend’s arena, and while the sport can be costly, winnings from competitions can help cover expenses. Community support can also go a long way.
Those interested in donating can do so at Heritage Bank of the Ozarks under the “Callahan Boys Fundraiser.” The boys are also looking for sponsors, so businesses can also reach out to Colby to get connected.
As they prepare to represent not just Missouri but the entire country, Maverick and Rhys are asking for prayers—for safe travels, safe rides, and a chance to bring home a win. You can follow their journey on Team USA Youth Rodeo’s Facebook page, where updates, highlights, and ways to support the riders are shared.
