JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Representative Rocky Miller of District 124 (Miller and Camden Counties) has received the 2014 Legislative Award for Freshman of the Year from the Missouri Chamber of Commerce.

According to the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, the Freshman of the Year Award goes to legislators who not only became prominent voices in their chambers, but became leaders on important issues in their first terms. The chamber believes those legislators' agility as freshman legislators is a clear sign that they will be true leaders in the General Assembly in years to come.

As a freshman representative, Miller, a Republican from Osage Beach, led the passage of House Bill 1075, legislation to protect employers’ property and assets from outdated unclaimed property. Some states have used outdated unclaimed property laws to seize business assets in an effort to pad state revenues. That won’t happen in Missouri.

“My bill has helped move Missouri from one of the worst rankings among unclaimed property laws to among the best. States will use Missouri laws as a model for reform in the future,” Rep. Miller said.

Miller also helped push through legislation to end economically crippling public beach closures at the Lake and throughout Missouri. The law implemented a new method for measuring water quality—one employed by neighboring states.

Miller owned his own business for years and carries a 94 percent vote rating with the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
