SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — A new tool in the fight against prescription drug misuse has arrived at the Lake. A local police station is now home to Missouri’s first drug destruction kiosk, giving residents a safe, simple, and secure way to dispose of unused or expired medications — no questions asked.

The kiosk, located in the Sunrise Beach Police Department’s lobby, was made possible through a donation from the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and will be maintained through the Laurie-Sunrise Beach Rotary Club’s Project SMART. The program focuses on community education, overdose response training, and prevention efforts to reduce addiction and save lives.

“This is the first kiosk to be put into service in the state of Missouri, and the 14th in the entire nation,” said Larry Kenemore, Rotary member and national coordinator for Project SMART. “Sunrise Beach is setting the pace for what community partnerships can achieve.”

Sunrise Beach Police Chief Scott Craig said the department is proud to help lead a proactive step toward prevention.

“We know that addiction doesn’t start on the street — it often starts in a medicine cabinet,” Craig said. “This kiosk gives families an easy way to safely destroy old prescriptions before they can be misused. It’s a small action that can make a big difference.”

The kiosk is open to the public during regular business hours. Residents can dispose of both pills and liquids, which are neutralized by a charcoal solution before being sealed and sent to a facility that converts the material into energy.

“We joke around a lot at Sunrise Beach PD, but this one’s serious — it’s as easy as dropping something in a box, and it could literally save a life,” Chief Craig added.
