With colder weather setting in, Ameren Missouri is reminding customers to schedule a service appointment to reconnect their natural gas before temperatures drop.

“Many students and renters may not realize their furnace runs on natural gas until they try to turn on the heat,” said Pam Harrison, senior director of gas operations for Ameren Missouri. “Scheduling your reconnection early ensures you’ll be ready when the cold temperatures set in.”

Unlike most utilities, natural gas reconnection requires an on-site visit from Ameren Missouri. A person 18 or older must be present while a technician inspects connections, activates the meter, and relights pilot lights. Appointments tend to fill quickly, so customers are encouraged to call 1-800-552-7583 or visit Ameren.com/MoveIn to schedule service.

About half of Missouri households rely on natural gas for heat. Ameren reminds customers to stay alert for signs of leaks, such as a rotten-egg odor, hissing sounds, or bubbles in standing water. If a leak is suspected, residents should leave immediately and call Ameren from a safe distance. Ameren responds to gas leak calls 24/7 at no charge.

Energy assistance programs are also available for qualifying customers, including Clean Slate for past-due accounts, Dollar More, Weatherization Assistance, and the Ameren Energy Relief Grant.
