Boat Parade 2022 019.jpg

Last weekend on Lake of the Ozarks brought the second attempt in as many years to break the Guinness World Record for Largest Boat Parade. The event brought more than 300 boats, but that was a far cry from record-breaking.

"Everyone who came out seemed to really enjoy themselves," said Heather Brown, interim director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We heard nothing but positivity about the event, we just kind of wish we would have had more so we could have broken the record."

Boaters came to the Lake from more than a dozen states to join in the attempt.

The CVB's first try, last year, brought twice as many boaters, with 612 participating. But that was still far from the world record, set in 2014 in Malaysia with 1,180 boats.

For the boats to be counted in the parade by Guinness World Records they had to follow a few rules including: every boat had to register and show its flag, and the parade had to be at least one mile long (and the participating boats all had to be part of the entire parade route).

After two consecutive years of attempts, CVB currently doesn’t have plans to try again in 2023. Brown said if they planned on doing it again it would probably be a few years in the future.

But, record broken or not, plenty of boaters seemed to enjoy a unique reason to be out on the water.

"Overall, I think it was a positive Lake event," Brown said. "Even though we didn’t quite break the record, it was still something a lot of people can say they were a part of and that not many people get to participate in to try and break a record."
