The Camden County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of K-9 Deputy Shadow, who died Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle during routine training with his handler near his home.

Shadow, a German Shepherd, joined the department in 2023 and was a dual-purpose K-9 trained in patrol tactics such as tracking, apprehension, and handler protection, as well as narcotics detection. He served alongside Deputy Dylan Rice and was considered both a dedicated law enforcement partner and a member of the Rice family.

“Deputy Shadow was a friend to all our deputies and a loyal partner to Deputy Dylan Rice,” Sheriff Chris Edgar said. “Shadow was a valuable asset to our department and a true friend to our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dylan and his family, and we ask for the public’s help in respecting their privacy during this difficult time.”

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
