The Shootout is all about jaw-dropping powerboats, but this year’s Shootout Live Auction—presented by the Sharing and Caring Foundation—will also feature an enviable (and own-able) muscle car: a brand-new 1965 Backdraft Cobra.
The Cobra, manufactured by Backdraft Racing, is not a kit car: it is factory-built using state-of-the-art components, including front and rear independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes by Wilwood. The Cobra’s muscly exterior only hints at what’s under the hood: an Iconic 427 motor with a 5-speed transmission. This car is known to bring over $100,000.
The Shootout Live Auction will take place on Saturday evening, Aug. 26, at the end of the first day of Shootout racing. It will be hosted by Camden on the Lake, during Supercat Fest, which takes place during Shootout weekend every year. The auction will begin at 8 p.m. on the lower level, adjacent to the outdoor band stage. Supercat Fest is organized by Alvin Heathman and offers a loosely-structured weekend of mingling and boating for supercat (catamaran powerboats) owners who converge on Lake of the Ozarks, many of whom come to watch and/or race in the Shootout. The event has obvious overlap with the Shootout, but is not officially part of the Shootout. This is the first year that Supercat Fest has hosted the Shootout Auction.
“Alvin Heathman always does a fantastic job and we are so grateful to be working with him and his event,” Shootout committee organizer Tiffany Maasen said.
The winner of the Cobra will be able to fully write-off the purchase price from taxes, as every penny goes to charity with no extra auction fees or commissions. Shootout Live Auction winners write their check directly to the benefitting charity.
The Cobra is being provided by Randy Kent with Midwest Muscle Cars and includes free transportation to the winning bidder’s door from Reliable Carriers, Inc.
“As always, the charity auction benefits over 36 organizations including several children’s charities such as The Sharing & Caring Foundation, Make-A-Wish Missouri and Kids Harbor,” Maasen said. “We are proud to be partnering with Super Cat Fest and bringing some great auction items to the table!”
The Cobra has a bidding reserve. Along with the car, other items that will be auctioned off at the live auction will include:
- 5 day Marathon Key luxury condo at Tranquility Bay — donated by Greg Semmel
- Celebration Cruise for 100 people
- Luxury KC Chiefs/or/ St. Louis Blues game package with transportation services — donated by GFI
- Exclusive LED Signs for DCB, Cigarette, Fountain, MTI & Skater — by CNC Illuminations
- 6-step Wet Steps aluminum, powder coated dock steps
- A Motoped by Marine Concepts
