LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — Organizers for the Lake of the Ozarks' biggest event, the world-famous the Shootout boat race, have announced a change to the "No-Wake" rules for this year's event.
Thousands of boats line the 3/4-mile Shootout race course every August, to enjoy a day of boat racing and other festivities. When the race ends, most boaters head in one direction, on the way back home: so years ago the Missouri State Highway Patrol — which enforces laws and regulations on Missouri waterways — implemented an Extended No-Wake rule for the latter half of the day on Shootout Saturday. There's a No-Wake zone for the few miles around the Shootout course all day, but an Extended No-Wake Zone in effect in the afternoon and evening runs from the 31.5 Mile Marker down to the 21 Mile Marker.
Last year the Extended No-Wake zone began at 1 p.m. But this year, the start time for that zone will be pushed back, to begin at 3 p.m.Â
Organizers are also expecting to see more Patrol boats in the No-Wake zone this year, said Shootout Executive Director Leah Martin.
The No-Wake Zone is designed to protect shoreline property as well as boaters. But it can be an unpleasant surprise for boaters who aren't prepared. As the race day comes closer, Lake Expo will keep boaters up-to-date on Shootout rules for boaters, events, and how to take-in the best boat race in the country.
