The powerboat race that launches the go-fast season at Lake of the Ozarks could be relocating to a part of the Lake that hosted the race more than a decade ago: the 7 Mile Marker, aka Toad Cove.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced the Lake Race Steering Committee has put in a regatta application for the event to be held between the 5 and 9 Mile Markers. Right in the middle would be the 7 Mile Marker cove that holds Camden On The Lake Resort, Horny Toad’s Entertainment Complex, and Shady/Lazy Gators.

The race would be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019, if approved by the Patrol. Members of the public who want to provide input on the modified location of the event may contact the Water Patrol Division. Correspondence may be directed to the division's email address regattas@mshp.dps.mo.gov or by calling the division's main phone number at 573-751-5071.

It does not appear much stands in the way of the permit’s approval. Captain Matt Walz, Director of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division, noted a race had been successfully held at that location in years past.

Lake Race, an Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) sanctioned race traditionally held at Lake of the Ozarks in early June, has been held at Bagnell Dam since 2013, when the event returned to the Lake after a three-year hiatus.

From 2007 to 2009, the OSS race at Lake of the Ozarks was held around the 7 Mile Marker.

The Lake Race Steering Committee will be hosting a social on the evening of Feb. 2 at Redhead Yacht Club to reveal more information about the race.
