Putting Out A Car Fire

Rocky Mount Fire Protection District, RMFPD, Fire Chief Kevin Hurtibise, left, and RMFPD Firefighter Palmer Cramer extinguish a fire in a 2005 Ford Explorer Saturday, June 23 on Indian Hills Lake in Rocky Mount.

Two fishermen went out for a day of fishing, only to look back at the shore and see their car on fire.

According to Rocky Mount Fire Protection District Fire Chief Kevin Hurtibise, on Saturday, June 23, firefighters were toned out at 2:31 p.m. to Morning Dew Road in Rocky Mount. They discovered a 2005 Ford Expedition fully engulfed in flames.

“The car owner had been fishing for approximately four hours on the Indian Hills Lake (a seven-acre lake) when they looked up and saw black smoke in the area where their car was located,” Chief Hurtibise said. The anglers had left their cell phones in the car. Luckily, a passerby called 911.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control, but not until after the car was totaled.

Two apparatus and five firefighters responded. Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:13 p.m.
